1. Gender Based Return Support Program
    Geographic Location: Dadu, Sindh
    Donor: UNHCR

Gender Based Return Support Program; a project based in Dadu Sindh which is the worst affected flood area; having Shelters & NFIs distribution with gender perspective to encourage affectees to go back to their areas of origin; while providing them short term support & to involve community in rebuilding their lives. The project ran through Gender Based Village Support Groups established on community level to help villagers take charge of their lives; the local capacities are build through Awareness Sessions revolving around Environment, Protection, Gender & DRR rendering natives better life skills by unfolding post flood issues with positive solutions of social development mechanism. The team endeavors to implement project closer and aligned to the requirements that can yield results in quick successions. The GBVSGs will work with clear TORs finalized by themselves; apart from developing a transparent distribution mechanism they will also be responsible for clearing of rubble with community involvement, motivating affectees to start rebuilding shelters for themselves, giving awareness to community members specifically pregnant women, lactating mothers &young children to control MMR/IMR, reconstructing small canals present in their area important for irrigation purpose, encouraging kitchen gardening to combat food crisis & identification of water sources to be cleaned/rebuild etc. most important of all to inculcate the concept of self help instead of dependency among the community members through FGDs.

Building up of referral mechanism also remained a part of the project where affectees facing issues for e.g. protection issues were linked up with agencies providing protection. Exclusive breast feeding, Wash & Right to Education specifically to female are some of the themes that CDO always explore with its beneficiaries to make them aware through its Village Support Committees & Volunteer structure in all its projects. Girl Child Early Marriages, Child Birth Registration & Importance of vaccination/immunization were also covered through awareness sessions & focused group discussions with the affected communities.

2. ‘CDO Health Watch Dadu’ through integrated programming: PHC/MHPSS, Nutrition Support & Protection to Flood Affected Communities
    Geographic Location: Dadu
    Donor: WHO

The health of mothers and children is central to global concerns, and improvements in maternal and child survival are two important Millennium Development Goals. Apart from the obvious linkages between health programmes, mother and child health is intimately bound up with economic development, education, gender issues and rights. It is a sad reality that Neonatal mortality accounts for almost 40 per cent of estimated 9.7 million children under-five deaths and for nearly 60 per cent of infant (under-one) deaths. This means that a child is about 500 times more likely to die in the first day of life than at one month of age.A common factor in these deaths is the health of the mother. Each year more than 500,000 women die in childbirth or from complications during pregnancy. Babies whose mothers have died during childbirth have a much greater chance of dying in their first year than those whose mothers remain alive. Ninety nine percent (99 per cent), of maternal and newborn mortality occurs in the developing world, where more than 50 per cent of women still deliver without the assistance of skilled health personnel. This is a powerful statement about inequity and access to quality care. Improving the health and nutrition of mothers-to-be and providing quality reproductive health services are pivotal to addressing many underlying causes of child mortality and keeping in mind this factor CDO Pakistan focused on strengthening Gyney & Peads department in DHQ & THQs of district Dadu during its four month project.

The proposed project incorporated an integrated approach provide primary health care services to flood affected communities, nutrition services to vulnerable group of population (children and women) as well as raise awareness and sensitize on DRR, Health, hygiene and nutrition, GBV and protection. The project addressed critical health needs of the affected population in order to minimize the human suffering as well as to minimize human lives loss due to malnutrition and disease.Exclusive breast feeding, Wash & Right to Education specifically to female are some of the themes that CDO always explore with its beneficiaries to make them aware through its Village Support Committees & Volunteer structure in all its projects. Girl Child Early Marriages, Child Birth Registration & Importance of vaccination/immunization were also covered through awareness sessions & focused group discussions with the affected communities.
